EAGLE LAKE FISHING REPORT: The fishing season begins Memorial Day Weekend May 28th, 2011. We update our fishing report several times a week during the season because we know that ONE DAY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! CURRENT EAGLE LAKE FISHING REPORT
THE “REEL” WEATHER: This is the location of Val’s blog, road conditions and weather discussions including air quality if smoke from local or distant forest fires settle into the Eagle Lake basin making for difficult conditions for those with breathing problems.More
EAGLE LAKE LAUNCH RAMP CONDITIONS: Report on Eagle Lake launch ramp conditions, fee’s (if any) and other information pertaining to launching a craft on Eagle Lake. Ramp Photo Album here. Bly Tunnel communications, decisions are also located in ramp conditions however info will be moving to Eagle Lake Guardians website in the future. More
LAKE CONDITIONS/TEMP/ELEVATION: This page is where water temperatures, algae blooms and everything that pertains to the water quality including CDFG’s water tests, pH and dissolved oxygen is found. More
VAL’S MAP OF EAGLE LAKE: The only contoured map of Eagle Lake with names and locations around the lake that is available on the internet. More We also have a special edition laminated map available at the General Store in Spalding during the season. Our special version is also available with Garmin GPS Map products for 2011. Also, see lake conditions and/or weather for links to quad and topo maps of the area, as well as LNF road closure map.
VAL’S TIPS AND TRICKS FOR FISHING EAGLE LAKE: First timers as well as seasoned Eagle Lake anglers can gain and edge by reading about different methods and set ups from trolling and bait fishing under slip bobbers to fly fishing Eagle Lake successfully any time of the year. See Gearing Up for tips on preparing for fishing Eagle Lake in December. More
IT HAS COME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT OUR COPYRIGHT PROTECTED WEBSITE AND PAGES ON OUR DOT INFO SITE HAS BEEN HI-JACKED AND/OR THE SERVER HAS BEEN ATTACKED. WE ARE REMOVING THE LINKS TO THESE INCREDIBLE STORIES BUT WILL HAVE NEW UPDATED ARTICLES COMING OUT THIS WINTER! STAY TUNED.
EAGLE LAKE TROUT SPAWN: Every spring California Department of Fish and Game collect eggs from the egg collection facility located on Pine Creek near Spalding. The eggs collected at the trap are used to stock Eagle Lake and other lakes as a leading propagation trout. More We will be updating these articles this winter and bringing them all to our dot net site & redirect our dot info domain. There have been some changes and progress made regarding a spawn upstream from the trap in 2011. There are also some problems being solved while others are beginning. My long time viewers know that every so often I upgrade and update these articles & winter (after fishing season closes Dec 31) is when I have the time to do it. I think you all will like the changes coming to our site for next season!
FISH RESCUES DURING THE SPAWN: We used to lose a lot of spawning trout in our seasonal tributaries during flow. Through the years we have rescued thousands of trout. Since we founded Project Eagle Lake Trout with California Inland Fisheries Foundation Inc. we were able to purchase material for Alaskan weirs to protect the tributaries before the trout get stranded attempting to head upstream to spawn. More However, we personally no longer support the PELT as it became a slush fund for CDFG and is now being steered to help people rather than the lake. We are only interested in helping the lake and have no monetary gain in doing so. So we formed our own local nonprofit called Eagle Lake Guardians which is only for protecting and enhancing the lake, avian habitat and all that she is about and all that affects her. SEE BELOW FOR GOVERNMENTAL POLLUTION WE ARE WORKING ON AND THOSE WE HAVE CLEANED UP.
CATCH AND KEEP RECOMMENDATION: Nearly every summer (except with exceptional water quality which comes at a lake elevation around 5105 ft) as water temps in the south basin reach 70F the pH of the lake rises. The rise in pH with high water temperatures creates a lot of stress on the Eagle Lake trout being caught and released. Criteria for posting the Catch and Keep Recommendation has changed between biologists but started out at a uniform pH (all three basins) of 9.2 and has come up to 9.4 as the lake barely dropped lower than 9.2 since the water level is below our Lady’s prime. More
LIVE RELEASE OF TUI CHUB: The tui chub are a native fish to Eagle Lake and provide massive schools of bait fish for the trout to fatten up on in fall to get through the winter months. It is not unusual to catch tui chub (which show up as a densely stacked school of fish between 15 and 45 ft on your depth finder) during the hottest months. As the lake level drops a lot of habitat for the minnows has been lost and we haven’t seen masses at lower water levels as we have at higher water levels. Please release these gentle plankton eaters alive. To avoid catching them, avoid the stacked schools on your depth finder…trout don’t school the same way but they all live in the same water together during the summer months. More
CDFG DEER FEEDING POLICY: Visitors are always amazed at the deer herd that lives in Spalding and most cannot resist feeding them by hand. The problem is that it is illegal to feed deer in California. Yes, some locals have been getting away with it for decades which is why our herd no longer migrates. Also, people are feeding the deer things that are dangerous to them without knowing it. Please refrain from deer feeding when staying in a cabin rental in Spalding, Buck’s Bay and Stones Landing. More
ARCHAEOLOGY & MORE: Eagle Lake is a very special place to all of us now. However, our lady has a long history including Native American Heritage Sites: This article and linked US Government documents detail a bit of her history and special standing to the Native Americans. One can still hear the whispers of the ancient ones among the pines, junipers and sage and appreciate visitors leave any artifacts where they were found. More
EAGLE LAKE FISHING REGULATIONS: No fishing inside the breakwater at Eagle Lake Marina. Pine Creek below highway 44 to the mouth at Eagle Lake is closed to all fishing. More
NEWS AND ISSUES AFFECTING EAGLE LAKE
OUR GOAL IS TO PROTECT AND ENHANCE EAGLE LAKE WATER LEVEL, WATER QUALITY, FISHERY AND AVIAN HABITATS. OUR ARMY OF GUARDIANS MADE ENOUGH NOISE TO GET THESE RESPONSES REGARDING THE WATER LEAVING AND ENTERING EAGLE LAKE. BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION, NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM AND JOIN THE OTHERS WHO DARE TO CARE. EMAIL eaglelakefishing@yahoo.com or TEXT OR CALL 530-249-1430
PLANNED EAGLE LAKE WATER STUDY THE GRANT WAS EXPIDITED AND THE CREEK MONITORING EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN ORDERED HOWEVER, IT DID NOT ARRIVE BEFORE PINE CREEK BEGAN TO FLOW. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT PINE CREEK AS WELL AS EVERY OTHER TRIBUTARY INCLUDING THOSE ON HIGHWAY 139 ARE FLOWING! THE ONLY EXCEPTION HAS BEEN LITTLE MERRILL WHICH THE DRAINGE COMES FROM THE "COLD" SIDE OF THE MOUNTAINS.
LASSEN NATIONAL FOREST POLLUTION Being a personal project to clean up pollution of and around Eagle Lake this information will stay on this website. However, when we pursue the next political pollution problem(s), Eagle Lake Guardians will have their chance to help. Trust me, there is more. I simply had to tell the Lake to stop throwing them all right in front of my face all at one time and give me the chance to solve the problem before tackling the rest.
Lahontan continues saber rattling and spitting out threats of cease and desist which will never happen as closing the facility would cause economic harm. This proposed cease and desist order will NEVER be enforced. That is stated in every other document regarding the leaking sewage ponds. LNF plead No Contest to the CDO but doubtful if LNF will be charged $1000 per day until the sewage stops flowing so there will be no reimbursement to the state taxpayers.
Doing the right thing does not win local popularity contests. Our one and only concern is protecting Eagle Lake and the fishery for the future. Sadly, it is often the very stewards in charge of protecting the environment who commit the worst environmental crimes, at least that has been our experience. Polluters come in all job positions but polluters are polluters (not to mention being CRIMINALS) regardless of their social standing, title or income and should be held accountable. After all, if you or I did it we would be locked up. Protecting the polluters and wrong doers is not what we are about, exposing them is. There are a lot of good, hard working folks at LNF who have nothing to do with the sewage ponds. All employees have to follow orders whether they like it or not however, only the weak minded don't do the right thing...for that big fat pay check of taxpayers money. But, we are glad to see some changes in the best interest of the lake now that the public has let them know how they feel. We will continue to give you the opportunity to speak...and as a legally formed group, we can keep the pressure on!!
This Board Order says it all for LNF.
SEE THE PROPOSED VIOLATION FOR 2010 HERE So all the violations and rhetoric to this point including the 2011 Cease and Desist has not prevented the leakage since 2006 yet the state taxpayers paid a lot of state wages over the years as well as the nations taxpayers paying for the new system that could be partially working by 2012. Without fines collected by the state, it is the California taxpayers getting screwed.
We hope that the staffing changes are for the best for LNF however due to past experience with LNF we know that it will be up to us to insure that more pollution does not take place and that LNF doesn't just bury the toxic, non-biodegradable liners in the watershed, just as they attempted with hundreds creosote barriers in 2005 (fortunately we caught LNF before the creosote barriers were to be "burned" after leaching in the watershed for 3 years, but not after creosote (1960's/early 70's formula...I know, my uncle put them in way back then) leached into the watershed for one year. Pictures tell the story better than words. Just goes to show you, the public often has to take control to protect their own public lands! Lassen College Foundation is powerless to do anything about LNF and their problems. LNF is the guilty party in the sewage problem. LCF cannot comment on LNF problems or do anything to improve conditions. You can count on the marina folks to give you accurate information and do their best to accommodate your needs.
WE DARE TO CARE. DO YOU?
